Western Conference Leader Loses to LA Galaxy
Seattle Sounders 3 – 0 Colorado Rapids
Colorado’s eight matches without a loss came to the end when they got beaten 3-0 in Seattle.
Fredy Montero was the first guy to put his team on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute. The whole action started with a corner kick by Freddie Ljungberg. Nate Jagua caught it with his head, sending it toward Montero who put the ball into the back of the net.
Colorado had a chance to tie the match, but Ugo Ihemelu missed a penalty kick in the 35th minute.
The second half saw a reversal of roles between Montero and Jagua. This time Montero set up Jagua in the 48th minute and he slid it pass Colorado’s goalie Pickens.
Twenty minutes later once again a combination between Ljungberg, Montero and Jagua payed off. Ljungberg passed the ball to Montero who sent it to Jagua and he shot it in from 15 yards.
To be fair, Colorado had a few good chances and 3-0 is little harsh result. “I didn’t think we deserved to get beat 3-nil,” Rapids coach Gary Smith said.
Seattle sits in third spot in the Western Conference, four points ahead of Colorado.
The Sounders won’t play till July 11 against Houston, while Colorado will host Chicago at home on July 4.
La Galaxy 1 – 0 Houston Dynamo
The leader of the MLS Western Conference couldn’t overcome Galaxy’s well playing defense and lost for the first time in 11 matches.
Los Angeles who is struggling this season, played one of their best matches so far. This was only their third win out of 15 games played this season.
Without Galaxy’s main scorer Landon Donovan, defender Todd Dunivant stepped in and scored the winning goal in the 24th minute. He beat Dynamo’s goalie Pat Onstad with a shot into the right side of the his net.
Galaxy was the better team throughout most of the match. Houston had a few chances of their own but did not convert.
LA will host New England at home on July 4 and Houston is traveling to Kansas City.
