U.S. Still Has a Chance to Advance

USA 0 – 3 Brazil

A different Brazil showed up today for the match with the United States and they were unstoppable.

After complaining about being tired in the match with Egypt, Brazil was a vastly improved team on Thursday.

The South American team went ahead in the 7th minute on a goal from Felipe Melo. Robinho added the second goal in the 19th minute.

At that point the U.S. was outplayed and under constant hammering by the Brazilian team.

The second half saw a similar picture and once again the U.S. lost a player to a red card. Midfielder Sacha Kljestan committed a foul on Ramires in the 57th minute and was sent off.

Five minutes later Maicon scored the third goal of the match on passes from Kaka and Ramires.

The last ten minutes the USA awakened when Casey and Feihaber both hit the crossbar.

Brazil out shot the USA 14-5 for goals. The defending Confederations Cup champion advanced to semifinals.

U.S. plays Egypt on Sunday and still has a chance to advance.

Egypt 1 – 0 Italy

Egypt proved that their close match against Brazil wasn’t a fluke.

The African champions went ahead in the 40th minute after Homos’ header ended in goalie Gianluigi Buffon’s net.

Italy was pushing for the equalizer but Egypt’s goalie Essam El Hadary made some crucial saves keeping his team in the lead. Italian coach Marcello Lippi summarized it this way. “We didn’t make it because their goalie was fantastic,” said the coach.

Egypt wasn’t really so much better, but at the end they managed to hold on for their first ever win against Italy.

The victory gives them a chance to advance to the semifinals if they beat the USA on Sunday and Italy loses to Brazil.
