Champions League results: Feb 23, 2010
Olympiakos 0 – 1 Bordeaux
The French Ligue #1 leader came closer to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after winning 1 – 0 in Greece. The better team won tonight, even thought not without a controversy. It was a rather shaky decision by referee Howard Webb Bordeaux who awarded a free kick to the French team and they made best out of it. Yoann Gourcuff played the ball to Michael Ciani who scored from close range.
The second half saw a few more chances from the French team as the host struggled to mount effective attack. It wasn’t till the last 10 minutes when Olympiakos managed to create a few good scoring opportunities. The win put Bordeaux within a shot of reaching the quarter-finals. If they do qualify, it will be their first quarter-final appearance since 1988.
VfB Stuttgart 1 – 1 Barcelona FC
Barcelona came to the Mercedes – Benz Arena as a favorite, but they struggled against resilient Stuttgart. The Germans have been on the run in the Bundesliga lately, winning six of their previous seven games. But tonight they were facing a formidable opponent. Barca came in full strength with a healthy Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Xavi.
Stuttgart started rather cautiously but grew in confidence as time went on. They opened the score in the 25th minute when Gebhart’s cross found Cacau who headed into the far corner. It was the same player who scored four goals against FC Koln on Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Catalan giant step up the tempo in the second half and seven minutes into it Ibrahimovic scored the equalizer. The action started with Pique’s pass to the Swedish internacional who put it in on second attempt. Stuttgart’s goalie Jens Lehmann stopped Ibrahimovic’s first shot but the second one was behind his reach. Ibrahimovic had a chance later on to give his team the lead but his shot struck Stuttgart’s Christian Molinari and went over the bar.
The draw is somewhat disappointing for the well playing German team who will have their work cut out for them going to Camp Nou.
