With all the hoopla going on about major athletes taking performance enhancing substances which are illegal because they give athletes an unfair advantage, are a health threat and defeat the meaning of competition, the importance of nutritional supplements is sometimes overlooked. When you are an athlete or an avid sports nut and you spend a good portion of your time working out, properly feeding your body the nutrients that are necessary to maintain a healthy organism is priority one.

For the average person maintaining a healthy diet to replenish the nutrients that the body spends is vital, but an athlete has to consider the extra burden it puts on the body and the need to use nutritional supplements to make up the nutrients that they may not be able to get in sufficient quantities from their regular diet.

There are certain nutrients that are essential for a healthy body. Along with carbohydrates, proteins and fats which provide us with the necessary energy, to carry on with our regular routines, the body also needs certain other essential nutrients which include fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and dietary minerals which help to support the metabolism.

Because it difficult to tell if our regular diet is providing all the necessary nutrients, sometimes it’s good to get in touch with a nutritionist which can help us figure out where we might be lacking and can help us develop a healthy diet and nutritional supplement regiment so that we can stay healthy.
