Weekend’s Round up of Major European Leagues

Primera Liga

Real Madrid 2-0 win over Getafe came about with both goals from Gonzalo Higuain. Real needed a win badly after a midweek embarrassment, the 4-0 loss to third-division club Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey. Osasuna got a lucky point with Barcelona after defender Gerard Pique scored his own-goal in extra-time.

Serie A

Fiorentina’s 3-1 victory propelled them to the top four team standings. Two goals from Marco Marchioni and one from Alberto Gilardino did the trick against bottom of the standings Catania. Inter’s lackluster showing got them the three points but coach Jose Mourinho should be far from being satisfied. Juventus also had their share of problems after losing 3-2 to Napoli at home. Up and coming Slovak star Marek Hamsik scored twice helping his team overcome Juve’s 2-0 lead.

Bundesliga

Werder Bremen’s last minute goal secured a point for the team and second place in the standings. Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw moved them to the first place in Bundesliga with only one point lead over Bremen. Last season’s contender for the title Hertha Berlin loss 2-0 to Dortmund. The Berlin team remains hopelessly last with only four points from eleven matches. Hamburg’s first loss of the season happened at home with Borussia Moenchengladbach despite being in the lead twice.

Premier League

Nine-man Liverpool recorded a fifth loss in eleven matches so far this season.The match was tied 1-1 before halftime, but second half goals from Erik Zamora and Clint Demsey decided the match for Fulham. Chelsea continues in their quest for the title with a 4-0 trashing of Bolton. Arsenal’s Robin van Persie scored twice, while Cesc Fabregas adding one goal in defeat of their north-London rival Tottenham. Old Trafford saw a 2-0 victory against bottom of the standings Blackburn. Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney secured the win.

Liguie 1

Ligue 1 leader, Bordeaux beat AS Monaco 1-0, at home. Marcus Planus scored the lonely goal in the 62nd minute. Monaco dropped to third in the standings because Lyon won at St Etienne also by a score of 1-0. Grenoble remains without a single point after a 2-0 loss at home to Lille. Paris St Germain won big on Sunday by beating Sochaux 4-1. It was their first win in two months.
