International Friendly Match Results: March 3

Today’s friendly matches included most of the teams heading to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa this coming summer.

One of the hottest favorite to succeed there is Spain and they cemented that position today by beating France in Paris 2 – 0. Argentina’s coach Diego Maradona put some of his criticism to rest after Argentina beat Germany in Munich.

More was expected from reigning World Champions Italy who managed only a goalless draw with Cameroon. Coach Lippi’s changes in the line-up didn’t bare the right fruit.

US national team failed again to win in Europe, this time losing to Holland. USA who ranks 18th in the world didn’t create many chances tonight in Amsterdam, scoring a lucky goal by the U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra in the 88th minute. Dirk Kuyt and Klaas Huntelaar scored for Holland.

England survived a scare by Egypt and came from behind to beat them with 3 goals to one.

European champions Greece surprisingly lost to Senegal at home. The same goes for Switzerland who was beaten at home by Uruguay 3 – 1.

The Czech Republic despite being the better team couldn’t score and lost to Scotland. It was the first match for Scotland’s new coach Craig Levein.

Russia under Guus Hiddink’s charge for the last time, could only tie with Hungry in Gyor. Hiddink will take over Turkey this summer.

The World Cup host South Africa continues with poor results after tying at home with Namibia by a score of 1 – 1.
