Qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa continued on Wednesday with matches in CONCACAF, Asian and Oceania zones. The rest of the world had some very interesting friendly matches.
The Oceania zone underdog Fiji ended New Zealand’s unbeaten record at home with a surprise 2-0 win. Despite the loss, New Zealand will advance to next round of qualifiers.
In the Asian zone, Japan comfortably beat Qatar 3-0, while United Arab Emirates tied with Iran 1-1. Australia with stars like Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill faced Bahrain, but had to wait till 94th minute to break the tie on goal from Marco Bresciano. South Korea’s 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia move them to the top of their group.
The only European zone World Cup qualifier was between the Czech Republic and San Marino. The Czechs were the clear favorites and the only question was by how many goals they would win. But in front of only a thousand fans, it took the Czech team almost 50 minutes to score their first goal. The final score was 3-0 but the Czechs didn’t look to convincing. Striker Baros and Fenin once again failed to score and one of the few positive things was a goal by rookie Tomas Necid. The Czechs occupy the second spot in Group 3, with two points less than first place Slovakia.
England beat host Germany 2-1 and recorded their fifth win in a row under coach Fabio Capello. Both teams were without their major stars. England was missing Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and last minute injured Theo Walcott. Germany were without Michael Ballack, Philip Lahm and Torsten Frings. England opened the score by Matthew Upson in the 23rd minute. Germany equalized in the 63rd minute when Helmes put it through the goalie’s legs. John Terry delivered the winning goal after Downing’s free kick. A victory in Germany provided the perfect end to England’s 2008 season. Fabio Capello should get most of the credit for that. Tough coach but knows how to deliver results, something England didn’t have for awhile.
Serbia trashed Bulgaria 6-1 in what was a farewell match for former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic. He scored two goals but managed to miss two penalties, yes you heard right two. He blamed the misses on his emotions. What a way to end one’s career.
The Netherlands 3-1 win over Sweden proved to be too easy. Robin van Persie scored twice and Dirk Kuyt added one. Kallstrom came on as a substitute and scored the lonely goal for Sweden.
Argentina won their first match under Diego Maradona’s coaching. They beat Scotland at Hampden Park by a score of 1-0. Maxi Rodriguez scored in the eighth minute on a pass from Carlos Tevez.
Theofanis Gekas’ goal in the 50th minute put Greece 1-0 ahead in friendly match with Italy. But not for long. Luca Toni equalized on 1-1 after a free kick from Daniele De Rossi. It was 31 consecutive international matches without defeat for coach Lippi.

CZECHO’S SOCCER CORNER
Diego Maradona-Argentina Football Association
Maradona may be out of his new job as a coach of Argentina before he even coaches his first match. He is in a headlock with Argentina’s Football Association president Julio Grondona over choosing his assistant. Maradona wants Oscar Ruggeri as his new assistant, a choice Grondona is not happy with. According to Argentine media he gave Grodona an ultimatum and he could possibly resign if he doesn’t have his way. Maradona was named the new coach last week to replace Alfio Basile.
FIFA-Teams Ranking
FIFA released their monthly soccer world ranking and Spain retained the number one spot. Germany is back to number two bumping Italy, while England returned to the top ten for the first time since June. First non-European country is Brazil in fifth place falling one spot…more rankings.
Gamba Osaka-AFC Champions
Gamba Osaka beat Adelaide United 2-0 and qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008 tournament. Gamba opened the score in the 5th minute from Brazilian striker Lucas Severino. Same player added a second goal ten minutes later. In the second half, the home team tried to open the game and score but Gamba’s defense was on their guard. Gamba won 5-0 on aggregate and will join the likes of Manchester United, Mexican Pachuca or Waitakere United from New Zealand in next month’s tournament.
Real Madrid - Ruud van Nistelrooy
Bad news for Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. He will have to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He visited his doctor in Colorado who recommended surgery. Dr. Richard Steadman operated on Nistelrooy’s knee with success back in 2000. The 32-year-old Dutchman will be out for two months giving coach Schuster, who has been under lot of pressure lately, even more worries. A man who scores 60 goals in two years with Real is hard to replace, but again there is always the possibility that Ronaldo will come. Maybe?!
Curling Cup-Graveyard for favorites
Harry Redknapp came, saw and won. Second match against Liverpool and second win. This was his biggest victory so far after taking over Tottenham 18 days ago. Four goals in Liverpool’s net speaks for itself. Chelsea lost on a penalty shoot-out against the Coca-Cola Championship club Burley. The hero of the match was Burley’s goalie Brian Jensen who saved two penalty kicks. The match ended 1-1 in regular time. Tottenham and Burley will join Man Utd, Arsenal, Stoke, Derby, Watford and Blackburn in the quarterfinals.
Landon Donovan-Player of Year
LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan was named the Honda Award player of year for the fifth time in his career. Finishing second and third in player of year award were Everton goalie Tim Howard and Fulham striker Clint Dempsey. The 26 year old leading scorer for Galaxy is in Germany on 10 days training mission with Bayern Munich. He doesn’t hide his desire to try his luck in Europe once again. He played in Bundesliga twice before but failed both times.

The Olympic Soccer tournament continues Saturday with the quarter-finals and we should see a couple of interesting matches. 2004 Olympic champion Argentina will face a strong Dutch squad with names like Babel, Makaay or their leading scorer Gerald Sibon. In the other two matches Italy meets Belgium and Ivory Coast is facing Nigeria. Italy is a favorite in this match especially after Belgium’s biggest star Vincent Kompany left the Olympics for his Bundesliga team Hamburk SV.

The US Men’s soccer team will need to draw or beat the very good Nigerian team to advance from their Group B. The US will have to do it without suspended Michael Bradley and Freddy Adu. In the other Group B match the Netherlands will fight Japan for their chance to advance to the quarter-finals. The Dutch have to win to qualify, a rather surprising situation for them considering their strong squad.
The Community Shield match ended 0-0 in regular time, followed by a penalties shoot-out which went the Manchester United way. Portsmouth was struggling and despite the striking duo of Defoe and Crouch they showed a disappointing performance. Coach Ferguson sent out a strong squad led by Gary Neville who finally saw some action after a lengthy recovery from an injury. Man Utd clearly missed their striker Ronaldo and Ferguson may have to come up with a solution to the team’s weakened strike force.
Brazil led by Ronaldhino showed no mercy and destroyed New Zealand by a score of 5-0. It took Brazil only four minutes to open the score from a header by Anderson.
