Can the U.S. Break Spain’s Unbeaten Streak?
Confederation Cup 2009 continues on Wednesday and Thursday with semifinal matches.
Everyone probably expected Spain and Brazil to reach the semifinals, but who could have thought that the USA and South Africa will be there too. Especially the U.S. team who had been struggling lately. But the heroic 3-0 win over Egypt gave the team back their lost confidence.
Coach Bradley has the full squad at his disposal with no injured players to be worried about. It remains to be seen if he will go with goalie Brad Guzan or Tim Howard. Spain’s strikers Fernando Torres and David Villa will sure put either of them to the test.
The Spanish team hasn’t lost since November 2006 and they have one of the best defense line in the world. But lets not underestimate the U.S. team and their players. The all-time top scorer for the U.S. Landon Donovan or up and coming Jozy Altidore can keep up with the best of the world.
The whole team seems to be upbeat and ready to face the challenge. “It will take a good game plan, but also full commitment from the players,” said Bob Bradley.
On Thursday the five-time world champions Brazil will face South Africa.
The host team finished second in their group, beating New Zealand and tying with Iraq.
Brazil with stars like Kaka, Robinho or Luis Fabiano are virtually unbeatable and losing to South Africa would be a big upset. “South Africa are an emerging team, but we know they will give us a difficult test. They’re strong, quick and they will have the crowd behind them,” said Brazil’s coach Dunga.
