Can Spain Go All The Way?
David Villa’s Goal Puts Spain Into The Quarter-finals
Spain 1 – 0 Portugal
Despite having the worlds most expensive player Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal couldn’t overcome Spain and is out of the tournament. Another talent without results, just like Rooney and few other “super-stars”. In a very intense match it was David Villa who scored in the 63rd minute on the rebound, giving Spain a spot in the Quarter-finals,., and a chance to go all the way.
Paraguay(5) 0 – 0(3) Japan
The match between Paraguay and Japan ended 0 – 0 after 90 minutes of cautious play. It went into overtime, but the match was decided on a penalty shootout. Paraguay won it after Japan’s unlucky guy Yuichi Komano hit the crossbar. Paraguay advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time ever.
Netherlands 2 – 1 Slovakia
A hard fought match between the Netherlands and Slovakia was decided by Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder who scored one goal each. Slovak striker Robert Vittek (two goals against Italy) made it 2 – 1 in the injury time, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Slovaks can go home with their heads up high after they reached the round of 16 for the first time as an independent nation.
Brazil 3 – 0 Chile
Brazil being Brazil, they reached the Quarter-finals with little struggle. In the South American derby the Brazilians were firmly in control of the match. The three goals were courtesy by Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho. Because of suspensions due to yellow cards, Chile was without several regular starters. Brazil will now face the Netherlands in the Quarter-finals on July 2.
