A Contraversial Tie Keeps Mali Out of Quarter-Finals

African Nations Cup 2010

day 10

Mali 3 – 1 Malawi

Monday’s action saw Mali beating Malawi pretty convincingly by a score of 3 – 1. But the win wasn’t enough for Mali to advance to the knock out stage. Instead it was Angola and Algeria who advanced because they played to goalless tie.

Mali filed an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football regarding a match between Angola and Algeria. Mali soccer federation accused both teams of purposely playing to a goalless tie so they both would advance.

Ghana 1 -0 Burkina Faso

Ghana reaches the knock out stage today after they beat Burkina Faso 1 – 0. Andre Ayew put his team through with a goal in the 30th minute.

Ghana was without one of their major stars Michael Essien who injured himself in training on Sunday. Their next opponent will be Angola who qualified to the next round on a controversial 0 – 0 tie with Algeria on Monday.

The quarter-finals start on January 24 with Angola vs Ghana and Ivory Coast vs Algeria.

In the other two quarter-finals Egypt is waiting for the winner of the match between Nigeria and Mozambique, while in Group C any of three teams still have a chance to join the last eight.
